Envelope Books

We were very pleased to welcome  new members Margaret and  Annette to their first  NWBA meeting, and pleased that so many members managed to circumvent poor travel conditions (Lime Street Station closed due to weather subsidence) to get to us, so that we had a good turn out for our Envelope Book workshop.

Prior to the start of the workshop we discussed the progress of our new blog.  We would love any links forwarding that might be of interest to members, book artists, or indeed artists in general. Use the blog to publicise things happening in other groups you are attached to, or events local to you.

Pictures of your work or work in progress are very much needed - (please send a large image rather than one sized for the web and we will do the rest)

The NWBA have booked a table for the Liverpool Book Art Fair. Other opportunities to exhibit and/or sell will be explored, so please pass on any relevant information.

We shared our books on "found" and there were some very interesting ideas and forms were shown, with other ideas in gestation discussed.

Christine Toh led our making workshop.   A large variety of envelopes were used, and some rather beautiful books resulted, some telling stories, some focussing on colours.

Christine also managed to fit in a basic instruction on Japanese stab binding   Simple instructions for two or three hole binding can be found in the internet, perhaps best via video as there is a small bit of mathematics and sequencing needed. Don't let that put you off however, as the results are very decorative.

A written description of 4 hole binding can be found here: http://www.designsponge.com/2013/03/bookbinding-101-japanese-four-hold-binding.html

Our April meeting is an away trip, to either a museum/gallery in Liverpool should weather be bad, or to a local beach if warm enough and tides allow. We will meet for coffee before going off to explore.

Finally, we are delighted to say that Ann Patterson has agreed to come and lead our September workshop on textiles in artist books. Ann is a lively, inspirational teacher who uses textiles in explorative, as well as more traditional ways. You can see some of her work here:

Our next theme for May is  "jeans", or indeed "genes"
