Book Cloth

Everyone enjoyed making some book cloth at this meeting, which we then used to cover a blank concertina book.

As always, we learned a lot from each other, and probably the most useful was the fact that it is important to use the right type of backing for the cloth.

HeatnBond high strength is great for heavier fabrics and makes placing the backing paper very easy, but for lighter fabrics the lighter HeatnBond is better, or using interfacing with a lightly glued backing for the paper.

Very heavy fabric looks good, but it is difficult to make a decent corner with this type of fabric. We all loved the tactile nature of a fabric cover, but if it is pale it will show wear and tear easily and might usefully be protected by a spray of something like Scotchgard.

We discussed upcoming exhibitions at The Atkinson and Knowsley, and need to do more planning at our next meeting.

Several people had brought completed books or works in progress, and Chris has agreed to lead our next session, with Frances providing our May workshop.
